Specifically, the combination of the WC3 custom map editor being both super simple to use while still allowing enough complexity to make a huge variety of games is something that just doesn't exist anywhere else. It's not an RTS, but does demonstrate that the core concept of making and playing user created game modes is still incredibly appealing. I guess Roblox is the closest alternative in terms of having a ton of user made custom games. We've had a couple of games that tried to do something similar (like Dota 2 custom maps), but it's just not the same. The custom map scene is simply unmatched to this day. Like there could be a really cool sequel there, but it will never ever happen, unless I someday do it myself i guess. Like maybe have a mission where you steal the plans to make a tank depot from the electronics store, and then you can make tanks. It could be like at first you can just build a barracks an HQ and a resource depot, and then as you gain new Allie's and make new ground. Maybe the tan army has taken over the store, and are using tech they've cobbled together from different department stores to build some kind of evil super weapon, and it's up to the green army men to build up an army and form alliances to stop the tans from achieving their goal. I could see maybe a large toy store or even a mall being a cool setting for a sequel. I've day dreamed what a sequel could look like. I kept hoping someone someday would make an awesome custom mod campaign but it never ever happened. I got it for all the systems because there were different features and modes depending on what console you were on, and I had to experience all the modes. As a kid I'd draw fan art of the game and then just go home and replay it. I was obsessed with it for the longest time. I guess it is not very well known because I never see anyone mention it, but Army Men RTS for the pc, PlayStation 2 and GameCube was and still is my favorite RTS Warcraft 2&3 both have a special place in my personal history of video games, especially playing Dota in WC3 and how much the story in WC3 carried over to World of WarCraft.įor newer RTS games, I really liked They Are Billions and Age of Empire 4 + the remasters. I was addicted to Age of Mythology, Company of Heroes, and Homeworld at one time or another. I still fire up Dawn of War 1&2 occasionally. I played most of the entire C&C series to death. Out of all the RTS games I played, it is the only one that I felt close to mastering. After beating the campaigns, I delved into the map creator functions and made a handful of truly amazing maps that my friends and I still talk about 20+ years later. It felt like we were all still together and it is a memory I cherish. I have to choose StarCraft+Brood War because when I first moved to Arkansas, myself and all my friends would play online matches 2-3 times a week for months on end together. It was my favorite genre for a solid decade+. I feel like I have played virtually all of them.
